Voki Lesson Plan for English Speaking/Listening Task

Instruction

Design a speaking/listening activity by providing some instructions and explanations using a Voki avatar. 1) Student's age, grade level and proficiency level 2) Goal of the speaking / listening task 3) Activity instructions This activity could either ask students to make an avatar for a particular purpose (in which case, you should make a sample avatar to guide them), or you could make an avatar and ask them to do a task based on what the avatar said. Write a 1 paragraph reflection on what you thought about this process (Designing a speaking activity using Voki)

Scoring Criteria

1) Whether you have fulfilled all the task instructions (see the page in the Snowboard) (4) 2) Design of task (is it appropriate for your target group of students?) (4) 3) Reflection (2)

Feedback from professor & classmates

* Feedback from professor

* Feedback from classmates

Ji-won pointed out that my Voki task is too easy for my target students, and needs more challenging elements for intermediate students, like giving more challenging words/expressions about certain jobs beforehand. I thought this was great advice for me and decided to edit my task according to her feedback.

Five changes I made

1. I specified the proficiency level of students in more detail.

After I got some feedback from my classmates, I realized that I should have more clear references and give a detailed explanation about the 'target students' who will get my Voki task.

Therefore, I changed the proficiency level from intermediate to intermediate-low level, in specific, and added descriptions about the students in blue color.

(Students are able to make full sentences in English if they key expressions are given.)

Also, I attached an English level table to give a blueprint of the whole English proficiency level in general.

2. Attached a worksheet for students

My classmate, Ji-won attached a worksheet for her Voki task and I thought it would be very helpful to give a better understanding. Therefore, I made a worksheet for my students as well. Students will be given this worksheet one by one, and then they will be asked to fill in the blanks.

I also gave my own example in this worksheet so that the students will be guided when filling out the tasks.

3. Edited grammar/language mistakes in the script

There were some typos and grammatical mistakes in the script, but language use in an educational script is crucial for language learners. Therefore, I edited the script using correct grammar and language.

4. Provided more examples of Voki avatars in advance to reduce time on navigating/choosing avatars and focus more on the language use itself.

▲ Police Officer

▲ Construction Worker

▲ the U.S. President

I acknowledged that students/learners who are going to do this task might have some difficulty choosing the suitable Voki avatar for each jobs, and they might spend a lot of time choosing which avatars best express the job they are going to take in the virtual world. Therefore, as a language teacher, I thought it would be great if I provide lots of Voki avatar examples in advance so that the learners can reduce their time navigating and choosing which job roles/avatars they should take and focus more on the language task itself.

5. Added the rationale of my Voki Tasks in <Reflection>
